The English Premier League (EPL) teams, ranked first in the European league rankings, lost face in the ‘War of Stars’ European Football Federation (UEFA) Champions League group stage. Manchester United and Arsenal, traditional powerhouses of the EPL, suffered bitter defeat on the 4th (Korean time).

As a result, Manchester United fell into a swamp of two consecutive losses in the early part of the group stage. After losing 3-4 to Bayern Munich (Germany) in the first away game, they lost to Galatasaray at home and fell to the bottom of Group A. In another match in Group A, Bayern Munich beat Copenhagen (Denmark) 2-1 away and took the lead with two consecutive wins.
